This Clock Built Into the Texas Mountains Will Tell Time For 10,000 Years [Clocks]

Right now, a clock that will tell time for the next ten millenia is being built into the Sierra Diablo Mountains in Western Texas. But why build a clock so monumental in scale? Because we can. More »

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it's still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources -- like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string -- results load as you type.

There's a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It's also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

Frank Ocean's 'Novacane' Video: One-Night Stands And Pandas

Odd Future crooner's eerie clip hit the Web on Thursday.
By Steven Roberts

Frank Ocean
Photo: MTV News

Since the release of his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra this past February, Frank Ocean has gone from a relatively unknown songwriter to the Internet's best-kept secret, and now he may be poised to be music's next big thing. But with Ocean choosing to do very little press, his appearance in Tyler, the Creator's "She" video may be one of the only times many people have seen the Odd Future crooner besides a handful of press photos.

That all changed Thursday: The video for Ocean's "Novacane," one of Nostalgia's many standout cuts, just hit the Web. The Nabil Elderkin-directed clip features Ocean in what looks like a dimly lit hotel suite. With each exhale of a joint, Ocean is surrounded by ghostly incarnations of beautiful women, tigers and pandas. At one point, Ocean smears what appears to be novocaine — or Procaine, for those out there with dentist parents — on his solemn-looking face.

The song is the first single from the Def Jam re-release of Ocean's album. A track list for the re-release of the album has yet to appear, but the free version featured a variety of samples, from Coldplay's "Strawberry Swing" to the Eagles' "Hotel California," which may be difficult to clear. When MTV News caught up with Ocean at the Coachella festival in April, even he joked that he was skeptical whether they'd be cleared.

"The Eagles sample has no chance in hell of being cleared," Ocean said. "Coldplay sample, possibly. I hear 'possibly' from people who say they know. MGMT, those guys seem chill. I heard they heard the record and they liked it a lot, so hopefully that can go some way.

"Hopefully the sh-- gets worked out. We might pull a Hail Mary and clear the Eagles' record. They might want all of the publishing for the whole album, though, which can't happen," Ocean added.

Ping iPhone cradle can lower your handicap, but you're still on your own with the gophers (video)

Finally, a reason to use your cellphone on the course that won't earn you icy stares around the old clubhouse. Golfing accessory manufacture Ping this week announced an iPhone / iPod touch cradle that clips onto your putter, using the company's iPing app to quantify your putting handicap number. The system measures your stroke type, impact angle, and tempo, comparing them against your friends and some pre-entered golfing pros. Al Czervik would be proud. The app itself is free, but the cradle will run you $30 -- both will be available online, later this month. It's certainly cheaper and a lot less bulky than systems we've seen, but don't take it from us -- listen to teaching professional Jeff Ritter in the clip below.

Senators' Bill Would Muzzle the Tracker in Your Pocket

Federal legislation aimed at eliminating loopholes that allow companies like Google and Apple track users using GPS location-based technology was proposed by Senators Al Franken, D-Minn., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., on Wednesday. If signed into law, the Location Privacy Protection Act of 2011 could force companies to obtain explicit consent from smartphone users before gathering their personal data.

RIM shares hit a five-year low: oh, how the mighty have fallen

There was a time when RIM owned the smartphone space with its revolutionary push email-equipped BlackBerrys. And there are still plenty of folks who can't live without a good physical keyboard and BBM. But, despite the company's $4.9 billion in revenue and $695 million in profits from Q1 2011, RIM's stock has tumbled to its lowest price in five years. What's changed since those heady days when it seemed like there was a Pearl in every pocket? As many of you know, Androids and iPhones have carved out a big chunk of the smartphone market, largely at RIM's expense. Sure, Blackberry 7 OS is coming and the PlayBook is rolling out to help the company gain ground on Android and iOS, but only time will tell if these latest efforts from Waterloo can stem the rising tide of iPhones and little green bots.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.

O'Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only

O'reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one "Deal of the Day", which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they've created a discount code -- DDJPN -- that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they've raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you've been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

Offering up another new look during a pre-taped UK TV appearance, Lady Gaga was the definition of bald and beautiful as she performed on the ?Paul O?Grady Show".

Meanwhile, Gaga is currently situated in Toronto, Canada while all set to take the stage this weekend as a performer at the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards.

Beyonce's 'Party' Track, Featuring Andre 3000, Leaks

Song from B's 4 album was produced by Kanye West and Consequence.

Beyoncé has already told us that it's girls who run the world. And with that bit of foot-stomping feminist business out of the way, B is ready to get her "Party" on.

That's the name of the tune from the singer's upcoming album, 4, which leaked on Monday and features a few verses from reclusive Outkast rapper Andre 3000. The song was produced by Kanye West and Consequence, with 'Ye helping to kick off the retro-'90s keyboard groove with the instantly quotable lines, "You a bad girl and your friend's bad too/ You got the swag sauce, you drippin' swagu."

Over a slinky, slow-bouncing synthesizer and drum machine track reminiscent of a New Jack Swing seduction groove from Al B. Sure!, Beyoncé croons, "I may be young but I'm ready/ To give you all my love/ I told my girls you can get it/ Don't slow it down, just let it go/ So in love."

Unlike the at-points frantic "Run the World (Girls)," the new tune takes its time, lyrically and musically, with Beyoncé luxuriating over her vocals and singing about the beauty of nice and slow. "I'll give it all away/ Just don't tell nobody tomorrow/ So tonight I'll do it every way/ Cause knockin' till the morning light/ 'Cause we like to party."

Andre comes in around the 2:15 mark, his nasally, rapid-fire flow instantly recognizable amid a barrage of brain-twisting rhymes. "Spit this sh-- for rillo, brain Brillo/ Kiddo say he looks up to me, this just makes me feel old/ Never thought that we could become someone else's hero," raps the ATL veteran about his now senior status in the game.

"Man, we were just in the food court, eating our gyro/ Yesterday, that's the way, every single mornin' I try to pray/ Grandmom 'n them, they never forgot, and nothin' else really mean nuttin' to me."

The slow jam runs out with Beyoncé reiterating the lines " 'Cause we like to party, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey" and then a reprise of West's opening lines in praise of that elusive swagu sauce.

What do you think of Beyoncé's "Party" track? Tell us in the comments.

Sony tablet teaser video is breathtaking, not overly informative

Woosh. Plonk. Snap. Like a highly atmospheric scene from your favorite film noir, Sony's teaser video for the S1 and S2 tablets starts off with isolated sounds and a bit of quick motion before settling into a sumptuous, deliberately paced feast for your eyeballs. You might say it's high art posing as a consumer electronics promo, particularly if you compare it to ASUS or Huawei's efforts in the field. There's sadly little in the way of new information, all we really get to witness are the reassuring Android Honeycomb software keys on the larger S1, but this "first impression" clip is the start of a series of ads revolving around a pair of alabaster figurines and their tablet-assisted love affair. Give the play button a bash for your recommended daily dose of awesome.

HP ships free TouchPads to homebrew devs, may want something in return

Like an anxious admirer, HP continues to lavish gifts on the lucky devs over at WebOS Internals. This time it's sending them pre-release TouchPads as an enticement to get busy and boost the 9.7-inch slate's app count before it launches next month. HP recently promised that "thousands" of TouchPad apps are on their way and, in addition to attracting big names like Skype and Amazon Kindle, it's also ensured that legacy apps continue to be supported on WebOS 3.0. With nearly 600 unofficial goodies sitting pretty at PreCentral's homebrew app gallery, HP clearly feels it makes sense to reach out in that direction too. And who said love was just a trick?
