RIM: It's okay, we have superheroes

It's a common human trait that, when faced with a series of calamities, the brain will retreat into a fantasy world in which everything is the exact opposite of reality. Could this be the inspiration for RIM's four new cartoon characters, which the company hopes will spread its "Be Bold" marketing message? The pattern certainly seems to fit. From left to right: there's GoGo Girl, who "saves the day with a brilliant strategy" (translation: we don't have a strategy). Then comes Justin Steele, who's "always ready to stick up for his friends" (translation: we don't have friends). Trudy Foreal "isn't afraid to call it as she sees it" (translation: our shareholders are complaining). Finally, the adventurous Max Stone is "able to jump out of a plane" (translation: we're going to crash).

Update: RIM has provided a little update stating that this is "not a new ad campaign." Still, it's fun to imagine what might have been.

GetGlue for Android updated, brings visual check-in stream and more

GetGlue Android Central

GetGlue, a popular social media application for the television and movie lover, has just released an update to its Android application that brings few new features to the table. For those unfamiliar with GetGlue (check out our review here) it allows you to "check-in" to the show or movie you are watching or even what music you're listening to, or something you and your friends are discussing.

The update adds a new visual stream of check-ins, which gives you all of your friends check-ins with some additional style. Each check-in will have user generated art, and if the user left a comment while checking in that will show over top of the image.

They have also added a real-time conversation mode which allows you to keep in the conversation about particular shows with ease. Each time you click to check-in to a show you are opening the gateway to a new conversation and now you are able to keep up with these conversations with ease. They have also included the ability to go back through other recent check-ins and view the conversations on those as well.

Finally they have added Guides, which aim to make it a whole lot easier to find things to watch, read or listen to. Each of these guides is unique and based on the users previous preferences and they are also updated regularly so you never have to fear being bored without something new to watch.

If you are a current GetGlue user you will want to grab this update and if you are not currently using it there is no better time than now to check it out. Download links are available after the break.

Fujitsu's Arrows ES IS12F has the light stuff, baby, heads to KDDI January 7th

A little junk in the mobile trunk never hurt nobody, but don't tell that to Fujitsu, where thin is clearly in. The company's gone all out on its latest handset -- the Arrows ES IS12F -- for Japanese carrier KDDI, hitting marks for both svelteness and ruggedness: pairing a 6.7mm profile with a Gorilla Glass and scratch-resistant body coating (think: the Brawny Man as a phone covered in Teflon on a Master Cleanse). This 4-incher's outfitted with an 800 x 480 AMOLED display, single-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor running Android 2.3, 5.11 megapixel rear shooter and, in keeping with the Arrows tradition, it's also waterproof. If you're living in the Land of the Rising Sun, you can snag this slight smartphone in Ruby Red and Gloss Black starting January 7th. Sorry, chubby phone chasers, you're gonna have to sit this one out.

Burrito Bison is a simple game for gummy bear lovers

burritobison
Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you're into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you're a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you're abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you're being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don't give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It's a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

Polaroid launching new tablet, color screen e-reader at CES?

What's this here, then? A sneaky tipster sent of some shots of what looks to be a new Android tab and a color screen e-reader from the photo-shaking folks at Polaroid. Not a lot to go on here, but, fittingly, the company is pushing the photo-taking capabilities of the slate, pitching it as a "tablet + camera," with what appears to be both front and rear cameras / flashes, the latter of which are prominently displayed on the rear of the device. The speaker also seems to get prominent placement, just above the screen. For the record, we whole-heartedly approve of the app selection on the device. On the reader front, we've got what certainly appears to be a color screen device, apparently suitable for reading the latest George R. R. Martin novels.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine
One click; just one single well-aimed click. That's all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It's been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic - it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn't get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don't get points for trying.

There's no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I've found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!
